Let’s take a closer look at some FanDuel & DraftKings NBA DFS action with our “Starting 5” picks for the day’s slate.

For those of you new to Moxyball or new to this column, welcome, and for those of you who have been reading with us since the start of the year, welcome back.

In this column we give you a play to consider at each position and then our 6th man who will be the one player that I will be personally spending up for.

Ok… let’s jump in.

Note: The important thing with NBA DFS is to be nimble and ready to make roster changes as injury news breaks throughout the day – right around 10-15 minutes before lineup lock in particular. Just like we mentioned in our season primer article that talked to overarching strategies for success, you need to be able to lock in some key values as they emerge throughout the day to get that leg up on your competition. These picks below are being shared first thing in the day from guys we like on paper – but you never know how their outlook is going to change as the day rolls on and other attractive plays shine through.

**Don’t forget to place your order for a Moxyball t-shirt! Pre-order pricing is only $12 for a limited time (link opens in a new window).**

PG- Patrick Beverley

He’s one of the top ROI earners on the board at PG based on his recent performance – second to only D’Angelo Russell who is a good chunk more expensive. For a PG2 on today’s slate in cash games, you’re going to get some very quality minutes from Bev. He’s coming off back-to-back 20+ point performances and gets a very poor defense in the Lakers tonight. For $4,200 on FD and $5,000 on DK, he makes for a solid value play.

Additional thought: for GPPs, I think a neat little pairing to roll with are Jordan Clarkson and D’Angelo Russell. Both are looking good right now and the value at $11,300 combined considering there is an excellent chance they can give you 60+ as a pair, it’s an attractive duo that I don’t think too many owners will trot out there.

SG- Kobe Bryant

It’s starting to look like his incredibly poor start to the season may be behind him. He had 48.4 points against the same Rockets team a couple of games ago, and then had 32.6 vs Milwaukee his name time out. Things line up very well tonight for Kobe, and for $6,800/$6,100, there’s a lot to like here.

SF- Trevor Ariza

Staying with the HOU/LAL game for a minute, Ariza is looking strong for cash games tonight. He is averaging 27.4 points over his last 3 games, and is a very solid play going up against one of his old teams. The value at $5,600 on FD considering he’s safe for at least a mid-20s output is quite nice.

PF- Clint Capela

The PF position is a little tricky to navigate today, with the fairly chalky plays looking like Kevin Love and Serge Ibaka. I don’t mind both Love and Ibaka on the slate, but I prefer how things line up for Capela if he looks like he’s back to full health. He had 28.5 points in 24 minutes against the Lakers last week and has been hovering around 20 points or so most of the season since seeing consistent minutes. The matchup is excellent, but be sure he’s back to full health before penciling him in. I also like Frank Kaminsky for value and Marvin Williams at $4,800 if you need to pivot.

C- Bismack Biyombo

Fire him up tonight. The $4,000 price point on FanDuel is just too attractive to pass up, especially in a bit of a “revenge game” situation with him going up against his old pals in Charlotte. He has a pretty clear path to a 4.5+ ROI, and it won’t take much for him to see that eclipse the 5-6 mark with a few extra boards and blocks. He’s had 19+ points in 2 straight and 3 of his last 5.

The Sixth Man

SG- James Harden

The stud that I’m paying up for tonight, full stop. He has 40+ in 4 straight games and prior to Dec 8 vs Brooklyn when he finished with only 26.1, he had only had below 40 in 4 games on the year. Talk about pretty remarkable reliability and elite production. In a great matchup against the Lakers, I expect his ownership to be very healthy tonight, but he’s a great option to build around in cash games.
